Clean Water Act Annual Noncompliance Report (ANCR) - Data Availability |
|

Metric Explanation (Metadata): The state data shown in this report and online map includes data from the national database (where it is valid), or manually-submitted numbers from states (which do not provide underlying facility names). States are not required to enter enforcement actions into EPA's national databases, but are supposed to maintain a tracking system for this information. Because EPA's interactive Web site allows users to "drill into" facilities with enforcement, this statistic provides context about the percent of information users can expect to see when that search for facilities. If you are interested in more information in states that have low data completion rates, please contact that state, or search state Web sites. Additional Explanation of Calculations: The percent data availability is derived as follows. The denominator is the number of enforcement actions in EPA's database. The numerator is the number of enforcement actions that the state provided to EPA during data reconciliation. So, if the national system indicated 10 formal actions and the states indicated 20, then the data availability would be 50%. In some cases, the states reported less enforcement than in the national databases in these cases, EPA assigned the state a 100% data availability. About the data: EPA pulled violation and action data from the national
database and sent it for review on 11/30/09. States that have complete
data in the national system confirmed their data, or made slight
adjustments. Other states without complete national data provided
alternative information based on state records. After compiling the
state reports, EPA provided a draft version to states on 2/16/10 and
made all requested adjustments.
